Animal Shelters Overflow with Housing Crisis: Need Support

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

The housing/ mortagage crisis is not only affecting people, it is affecting animals.  Countless people are forced to abandon their homes which they really could not afford and were lured into thinking they could, especially in the year 2006.  Many of these people own pets and find that they are in too stressful of a situation to be able to care for a cat or dog anymore.  Some of these pets are just left in the foreclosed home for the animal shelter to rescue.  Others are left at the local animal shelter to either be humanely killed or to have someone find a home for their pet.

Animal shelters need your support through donations now more than ever.  Countless adult cats face a humane death if support is not given since the care of these cats costs the animal shelter a lot of money.  Support is also needed if you can afford to adopt a cat.  You can also donate airmiles or donate your older car to help the local or national animal shelter.

If you are considering adopting a full grown cat, be sure that you do not already have another cat or cats that will fight with the new cat.  Oftentimes cats will fight with eachother which will lead to stress and disease in all of the cats.

Animal Shelter Support: How Shelters Help Animals

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

An animal shelter is often a place where animals rescued from abuse go to live until they are adopted. Pets are evaluated for safety. If a dog is too aggressive to be a pet, it often is put down. An animal shelter is not the best place for young animals to grow up. That’s why they often need a small space in your home for a week, or maybe a month until a home can be found. An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats. You can also often find smaller pets such as rabbits, pet rats, pet mice and hamsters available to adopt. The animal is kept at the shelter until it is either reclaimed by an owner, adopted to a new owner or placed with another animal rescue facility.

Animal Shelter Support

Animal shelters are your best source when looking for a pet. Not only do they have a great selection of adult animals for adoption, but they also have kittens and puppies, and even purebred animals. Animal shelters are packed with unwanted animals. Leaving your cat there will most likely doom it to be put down however since the rate of adoption for adult cats is very low. Animal shelters are filled to the max and are forced to turn animals away every day. Euthanasia has been used as a last option all over the world, but nobody wants to kill animals.

Animal shelters are important for the protection of a stray animal. They are places were unwanted, stray or abandoned animals find a home, albeit a temporary one, and are cared for for a time. Usually until a better home can be found.

Humans have lived with with other animals for 100s of years but today some people treat animals as if they are disposable. Animal shelters have decided to take actions agains animal cruelty. They need your support to accomplish this.

Adoption of a pet from an Animal Shelter is a road that few people take. The fact is that only 10-15% of animals get adopted at most shelters. Adopting dogs from an animal shelter is a great thing; however it is very important that you make an informed decision before adopting an animal. Most of the animals come from dysfunctional homes or are left because their last owners could not keep them any longer.

Cats bring joy and happiness into the lives of most people. People can bring that same sense of joy to a cat by adopting a cat from an animal shelter.

Pets being the wonderful creatures that they are enhance our lives tremendously and give us much more than we provide for them. Pets also give children an opportunity to interact with a live-in playmate rather than playing video or computer games or watching TV. You may want to consider taking the time to educate others as to the importance of giving homeless pets in our community a good home. Pet stores are constantly packed with people who think that getting a dog at an animal shelter is not the way to pick a good family dog. Sure, they may feel sad as they think about those poor dogs fat the shelter, but do they actually do anything about it?

If you cannot adopt a pet, then you can support your animal shelter by donating money, time or a car.

Animal Shelter Support

You probably have seen one of those heart wrenching animal shelter support commercials that broke your heart and made you want to open your wallet to help those poor animals in need.  I know that commercial is the only one that makes ME feel that way and I pretty much like to make my own mind up about whom to donate to.

You may find some links above that take you to the right site to donate your animal shelter.  Make sure that you are supporting an animal shelter that has locations in your state if you are interested in supporting animals locally.  Of course animals need help everywhere so any donations will be used well in all areas of the world.

Some other ways to help animals in need with your charity money include

  • supporting animal rescue
  • donating to wild life animal habitat
  • sending money for wild animal rehabilitation
  • donating money to give needy pets vet care
  • give money to support dogs and cats rescued from abusive situations
  • sending money online for service animals for needy disabled people

There are lots of ways to help animals online.  Many donation sites now take convenient online donations such as Paypal payments.  An online donation for an animal makes a lovely present for the person who has everything.

Another way to help animals is to donate airmiles.   One way that I took part in was to donate old car to my local animal charity.  They were more than happy to pick up my non-running car and sell it for what they could.  I got a tax donation and everyone was happy with the donate old car.
